How VAIO Android handset to launch during CES 2015 next week?

According to a new rumor, the now defunct VAIO series could see a new life in the form of smartphones. It is said that VAIO branded Android smartphones will be officially shown off at the CES 2015 event next week.vaio corporation was sold out by Sony to Japan Industrial Partners earlier this year, although the company still holds a minor 5% stake in the company.

This rumored smartphone is expected to jumpstart the VAIO business again, leveraging the popularity of the Android platform. VAIO also enjoys a certain degree of recognition among the global audience, so this could turn out to be quite an interesting device if this report turns out to be true.
According to Nikkei, this smartphone will pack a 5-inch display and "feature an app that can manage email as well as phone and video calls all together". So we might be looking at a heavily customized build of Android here.
Details on other aspects of the hardware are pretty scarce at the moment, but given that the CES is just a week away, we don't have to wait long to find out. It will be interesting to see how this will impact Sony's Xperia series of smartphones, which are quite popular in its home region of Japan.
We're assuming the new VAIO handsets will mostly cater to the midrange segment, considering that the Xperia range is solely focused on the high end market. Even though Sony has sold off most of its shares in the VAIO Corporation, it wouldn't want these new range of handsets to clash with the existing Xperia devices.

SwiftKey lands free on iOS 8 in time for the iPhone 6

SwiftKey, the predictive keyboard app beloved by Android users, has launched it's free iOS 8 app to coincide with the launch of ios 8
Until iOS 8, Apple devices haven't supported third-party keyboards. If you're running an iOS 8 device you can go grab the keyboard from the App Store right now.
It also means that iphone 6and iphone 6plus users will be able to use the app's predictive technology and become better, faster and more efficient typists, when the phones are launched tomorrow.
SwiftKey works by proactively suggesting the next word it thinks you'll want to type, as well as autocorrecting your typos and adding spaces where they've been missed.

Cloud control:

The SwiftKey Cloud feature lets you sync your typing preferences across devices and platforms and lets the app benefit from analysing your typing history through Facebook, Gmail, Evernote et al.
"It's always been our mission as a company to make it easy for everyone to create and communicate on mobile," said co-founder and CTO Ben Medlock
"This marks a big change for the millions who use iPhone, iPad and iPod touch: access to more choice and greater customization is, literally, right at their fingertips."

Review of Iphone 6

The some, the attraction of the masses to Apple devices is almost unfathomable. The iPhone has never been one of the most powerful handsets in the world, nor the smallest / largest, and yet seven years later it has retained (and grown) its unshakeable following.
However, in the last 18 months, the death knells have started quietly sounding, ringing in the distance as the best Android phones - once only a rival on spec or price - became genuine challengers and then out-and-out better handsets.
im Cook knew the brand needed to do something, and quickly - and that's just what's happened, with the iphone 6 representing one of the most comprehensive overhauls of the iPhone range since the iPhone 4 - and actually going one step further in a lot of ways.
The processor is obviously uprated, the camera quicker and more capable than ever before, and the battery has been enlarged significantly to quell the disquiet at the power use of previous models.
But there's so much more here that represents a seismic shift for Apple: the increased resolution on the screen is really helpful (and badly needed) and the payments mechanism, while limited to the US only at the moment, will be the boost that the smartphone payment industry needed.
And of course the larger screen will stop admiring glances from those locked into the iOS ecosystem to phones such as the HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z3

Android Lollipop users warn of 'unusable' devices after upgrading

Users of Google's latest mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, are warning others not to immediately upgrade, after experiencing broken apps, repeated crashes, and device slowdowns.
Many are reporting early issues with calling, and sound quality — in some cases, audio fails to work altogether.
But a more pressing issue emerged: Apps built with Adobe Air have in many cases been removed from users' Nexus devices, and cannot be reinstalled
The fifth major version of Android, dubbed "Lollipop" after Google's candy-based naming scheme, was  It lands with a number of improved features, including a new user interface and experience, and a consistent design across the board — from smartphones to tablets, and newer devices, such as wearables.

"Unusable"

The Lollipop update has been hit with some harsh criticism by its users since it first landed in their hands, despite strong feedback from the tech community when it was first announced earlier this year.
Users have said they "regret" the over-the-air download, saying the older Nexus 7 tablet is "laggy, restarts, and crashes randomly." In some cases, apps were not responding.
"The whole tablet experience is ruined,"
Android user Cristian Alejandro Chavez Lopez said: "That's the word to describe it: unusable."
A number of people on Adobe's forums have complained that installing Air apps would see a non-descript error message, "-505".

Campbell said the company had not been aware of what he described it as a "critical" bug before November 18.But, the issue has been "escalated" to Google," seemingly pointing the finger at the search giant rather than in its own camp.
But there was confusion over exactly who knew what.
App developers for Bonza, one of the affected apps, investigated the problem, one Google developer forum post said.
User "PaddyLandau" said that Google said that the "-505" error is "a known issue for apps running Adobe Air on Android 5.0."
However, Campbell was quick to deny that Adobe was aware of this bug, and contrary to reports "were not working with Google on a fix."
He added that the company was not able to reproduce the problems internally.
"We're going to expand our testing and engineering will be canvassing the forum posts and bug reports for additional clues," he said.

"A paperweight"

Although the software is only available on a limited number of devices, thanks in part to the cellular carriers withholding the software until device testing is complete, many of the issues appear to be related to Google's own branded smartphones and tablets.
Google Nexus owners can  for their devices for installing, or download it over-the-air on Nexus 7 devices — which, based on the forums, appear to be having the most problems. Android Lollipop is currently available for Google's range of Nexus phones and tablets, including the new Nexus 6 "phablet" and Nexus 9 tablet, which were released last month.
Many on Google's support forums have , detailing how to revert back to Android 4.4 KitKat, because according to one user, Lollipop  into "nothing more than a paperweight."
We reached out to Google for comment, but did not hear back at the time of writing. Any updates, and we'll include them here.

Customers reporting interest in cloud, containers, Linux, OpenStack for 2015

As 2014 comes to a close and IT departments reflect on their initiatives heading into the new year, we asked a group of 115 Red Hat customers -- ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses -- about their priorities for 2015. What we heard from the respondents is promising going into the new year: Budgets are increasing (or at least staying the same); Linux adoption is increasing; cloud deployments will be dominantly private or hybrid; OpenStack is hot; and interest in containers is emerging.
Budgets -- always a popular topic at the new year -- look strong going into 2015: 84 percent of survey respondents are optimistic about their 2015 budgets, with 40 percent of respondents planning for a budget increase, and 44 percent expecting their budgets to stay the same. According to the survey results, respondents are planning for several key IT initiatives in 2015, including:
  • Mobility and mobile apps: 69 percent
  • Big data: 68 percent
  • Customer engagement: 53 percent
  • Private cloud computing: 46 percent
  • DevOps: 45 percent
Survey respondents are also bullish about the increasing Linux adoption in 2015: 59 percent plan to use Linux for brand new applications or services, or greenfield deployments, and 41 percent are planning migrations to Linux (26 percent are planning Windows-to-Linux migrations; 15 percent are planning Unix-to-Linux migrations).
Paul Cormier, Red Hat's president of Products and Technologies, previously noted that an organisation's cloud strategy . And while cloud has firmly become an enterprise reality, 32 percent of survey respondents reported that their organisations are still determining their cloud strategy heading into 2015. Of those organisations that are already moving to the cloud, respondents identified their cloud deployment strategy as being:
  • Private cloud: 27 percent
  • Hybrid cloud: 26 percent
  • Public cloud: 15 percent
When asked about the top benefits of cloud computing, respondents cited cost savings (59 percent), followed by scalability (55 percent); accessibility, including mobility and business continuity (53 percent); speed of deployment (50 percent); and the ability to replace on-premises legacy technology (48 percent). The survey revealed some potential challenges for cloud in 2015, including security (57 percent), cloud interoperability (31 percent), compliance (30 percent), ability to measure ROI (29 percent), cloud portability (27 percent), and governance/loss of IT control (27 percent).
When it came to OpenStack -- the popular open-source cloud computing software platform -- the majority of respondents reported plans to continue use of or invest in OpenStack in 2015. The top benefits cited for OpenStack were greater automation (18 percent), improved agility to meet customer and business demands (17 percent), and lower costs (15 percent).
And while Linux containers are creating much industry excitement over their potential to radically change the way applications are built, shipped, deployed, and instantiated, survey data shows that enterprise adoption is still emerging. According to respondents, 13 percent are using containers in development and test environments, and 20 percent are evaluating containers for future use. The top perceived benefits of containers as seen by the respondents included the ability to deploy applications faster (54 percent); reduce effort to deploy applications (40 percent); streamline development and testing (38 percent); lower costs associated with application deployment (31 percent); and help consolidate servers (25 percent).
The below highlights many of these customer priorities for 2015. Overall, the survey responses tell us that there is a lot to be excited about in tech in the coming year. In our next post, we'll highlight specific predictions from Red Hat executives and subject matter experts. Stay tuned for their thoughts on what we'll see in 2015.
